Amphora cigarettes have flavorful soft tobacco that is well known to many smokers. And very often this brand is called one of the first tobaccos that open the door to beginners in the pipe world. This, however, is associated with a certain dismissive attitude to these tobaccos – they are remembered too simple and excessively flavored. And only with the acquisition of this brand of Amphora cigarettes in 2015 by the Danish company Mac Baren, it gradually became available.
The founders of the Amphora cigarettes brand – the Dutch company Douwe Egberts – have existed for more than 250 years. Its history began in 1753, when a young entrepreneur Egbert Duts opened a small grocery store “De Witte Os” (translated as “White Bull”) in the town of Jovr, province of Friesland, in the Netherlands. Interestingly, this very small building exists and now, however, which looks quite logical, there is a museum of the company.
The development of Douwe Egberts, named after the son of Egbert Dav Egberts, continued very actively, already in the XX century they became one of the largest enterprises engaged in the wholesale trade of tea, tobacco and coffee in Europe, and later, merging with the most famous international corporations, and in the United States.
In 1998, the entire tobacco business, together with the most famous brands, was sold to the international tobacco corporation Imperial Tobacco, which owned the Amphora brand until 2015. The amount of the transaction amounted to more than a billion dollars.
Since that time, Sara Lee Corp, which then included Douwe Egberts, focused on confectionery and coffee production, and in 2012 it was decided to diversify the business again, and Douwe Egberts Master Blenders 1753 (this is how the Dutch manufacturer begins to be called), again becomes an independent company. This name speaks of a century of history, and a huge experience in mixing various varieties of tobacco, coffee and tea. In 2014, it merged with the American food conglomerate Mondelez International, well-known in our market popular brands Jacobs, Carte Noire and Corona, and in 2015 the brand Jacobs Douwe Egberts was introduced. But their main activity remains the production of Amphora cigarettes.
